The State of Data: Transitioning To NERIS

Monday, April 07

A product of the 1973 Fire Prevention and Control Act, NFIRS has been the hub of incident response data for the past 50 years. However, the last major update to the data collection elements came 25 years ago with the release of NFIRS 5.0. While the mission of the fire service has not changed in this time, the environment to which fire firefighters respond absolutely has. Residential structures are larger, more open, and more energy efficient and use more lightweight construction. Energy storage systems and batteries are now commonplace across all communities. Many of the largest wildland fires and urban conflagrations have occurred in the past decade. To better character these types of incidents as well as the new hazards we don’t yet know about, an overhaul of data collection was needed. In May 2023, development of a replacement system, known as the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS), began. NERIS will replace NFIRS to become the premier source of information for our nation’s emergency responders on 1/1/2026. NERIS will empower fire departments by providing them with information and analytic tools to enhance preparedness and response. The workshop will discuss the development of NERIS including how and why the new and legacy systems differ, how to onboard your department to NERIS, how to use the NERIS data collection app, and how to use the provided data analytics services.
