The Connection Between Stress, Trauma, Anger and Addiction

Learn how stress management and the processing of trauma can prevent the inappropriate expression of anger and alcohol abuse.  This class will start by addressing the stress response, common signs of stress in first responders, and the impact of chronic stress.  The role and importance of exercise in managing stress will also be discussed. It will define trauma and its effects on the brain and nervous system, identify common traumatic events for first responders, and discuss the signs, symptoms, and effects of trauma.  It will delve into PTSD, avoidance, freeze responses and disconnection, and moral injury.  Complex PTSD will also be explored, along with strategies to manage and treat PTSD symptoms.  The next focus will be on anger, examining its definition, nature, and connection to mental health disorders.  Strategies for managing anger and leveraging it for positive change will also be provided.  Finally, the session will explore the journey of addiction, including its definition, development, the addiction cycle, risk factors, identification, treatment, and recovery.  Attendees will learn how to support someone in their recovery journey.
