Mayday Monday: Surviving the Commercial Building Fire

Tuesday, April 08

This is a firefighter survival campaign with a mission of reducing firefighter injuries and deaths on the fireground by reviewing firefighter line-of-duty deaths and close calls. In reviewing these tragedies, we honor the memory of the members involved by learning more about their lives. Where were they from? What did they do before joining their department? Were they married? Have kids? How long had they been on the job? Then we dive into the incident by reviewing available reports on the fire (or incident) and asking other members of the department. We present a firefighter survival skill/drill that was learned through the sacrifice of the firefighter. Some of these drills include methods for rescuing firefighters from a basement or below-grade location, negotiating an entanglement hazard, removing a down firefighter from an above-grade position, and becoming more familiar with SCBA. Incidents reviewed in the workshop include residential fires, commercial building fires, basement fires, highway responses, and gas emergencies. The workshop will provide training to survive the fireground.
