Essential medical skills for the Firefighter/EMT
The EMT has been the backbone of EMS since its inception, but it is not an “entry level job,” as it brings with it responsibility, accountability, and an ever-growing scope of practice and required knowledge base. With the ever-changing landscape of EMS, more patients being treated at home and not in the hospital, and the workforce shortage of paramedics, the “basic” EMT is not so basic anymore. And if you haven’t noticed, the fire service is now EMS. This class will cover a broad range of topics, including practical understanding of relative anatomy, pathophysiology, history taking, and scope of practice skills and interventions that will aid the firefighter /EMT to fully use skills to enhance patient outcomes.
