Common Devices in Chronic Medical Care: What You Need to Know
As community paramedicine grows and the longevity of people with chronic medical conditions increases, the number of patients with medical support devices will increase accordingly. Prehospital care providers must become more familiar with the long-term support devices common in patients with chronic medical conditions. This class will familiarize prehospital personnel with the anatomy, mechanics, and common emergencies associated with long-term support devices, including the left ventricular assist device (LVAD), tracheostomy, durable central venous access (peripherally-inserted central catheter--i.e., PICC, Mediport), enteral feeding tubes, and different types of surgical drains. A take-home reference guide will be provided and referenced throughout the presentation. Both routine and emergency care will be discussed for each device, encompassing the scope of both community paramedicine and emergency care. Participants will walk away with a new skillset that will enhance the delivery of care, communication with hospitals and long-term care facilities, and quality measures for these complex patients.
