Be Kind: The Whys and Hows of an Inclusive Firehouse

Thursday, April 10

In this class, participants will engage in a direct, no-nonsense exploration of camaraderie and respect within the fire station. Grounded in solid research, this course confronts the often-blurred lines between banter and disrespect. Participants will delve into the “Disrespectful Behavior Triangle,” recognizing intentional incivility as the bedrock of toxic workplace dynamics. Drawing from Chief Alan Brunacini’s guiding principles of "Prevent harm. Survive. Be nice," this session will explore the importance of a gentle-hearted approach to service, emphasizing the human element in fire service operations. By examining the nuanced “49 Shades of Grey” in interpersonal interactions, firefighters will learn to identify and curtail behaviors that undermine team unity. This course promises to be an eye-opening session, equipping firefighters with the tools to build a stronger, more cohesive unit by eradicating disrespectful behaviors at their root.
