Buildings Born, Sick, and Dying
Buildings are “born” when they first break ground for the foundation to construct a building or any type of edifice. A “sick” building would be one that is built; may be occupied and in need of repair; and is undergoing restoration or a major alteration that would affect a change to its floor plan, structural configuration, or occupancy type. A building “dying” is one being demolished or deconstructed. Invariably the fire service will be called on to respond to these buildings in the three phases. This class will identify and prioritize in detail the resources needed to “be prepared” for the inevitable calls for assistance and mitigation of calamity. These sites are a dangerous arena not only for the workers but the firefighters who must navigate the terrain for fire operations or emergency intervention.
